We started out 26 years ago as a small publishing house with a portfolio of legal literature, but gradually we spread across genres. Working with some of the best publishers and literary agencies in the world, now we are home to a strong list of international award-winning and bestselling authors.
We have made a name for ourselves over the years as a national leader in publishing by carefully and thoughtfully choosing our authors and by maintaining a close connection with Bulgarian readers.
We achieved this by publishing well-known names, such as Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Stephenie Meyer, Nora Roberts, David Baldacci, J. R. R. Tolkien, Sylvia Plath, Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, Bernard Cornwell and Ray Bradbury; however, we are constantly on the lookout for exciting new names in literature, debut writers, authors who have never been published in Bulgarian.
We are the publishers of Fredrik Backman, Victoria Aveyard, Pierce Brown and Claire McIntosh, whom we published before they ever became a sensation in the English-speaking world.
We also have a solid portfolio of classics, which we publish in hardback and reintroduce to new generations of readers, for example, Irwin Shaw, James Clavell, Nikos Kazantzakis, Erich Maria Remarque, Arthur Clarke, Gore Vidal and Gustave Flaubert.
One of our strong points is our own bookstore chain. It is the second-largest bookstore chain in the country, with many bookstores in the capital and more spread across the country. It allows us to organize many campaigns publicizing our books.
We also work with all major book distributors in the country and most of the small ones. We aim to have our books everywhere.
In addition, our online bookstore (www.ciela.com) is the main distributor for books in Bulgarian for Bulgarian readers abroad, because it offers delivery outside the country and often works with foreign schools and libraries.
The Bulgarian book market is not a big one. However, it is very vibrant and we are making the most of it. Our goal for the past three years has been to expand it and we are proud to have achieved certain success. We believe that commitment and diligence are of chief importance and we are determined to persist in our efforts. According to reports of major book distributors each year, we publish roughly 20% of all bestsellers in Bulgaria (according to Top 100 Bestselling Books).
We generate the largest turnover in Bulgarian book publishing and we have the second-largest working capital. We are determined to use it to make more and more wonderful books.
